Can’t have Brunei halal seal for a song

SMEsHalal

“They have to understand the structure… because the commercial deals (part of the Brunei Halal Brand) later on will require them to cut a deal with other companies,” Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar said yesterday following a workshop organised by the ministry for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in the Brunei Halal Brand.

Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid stressed it is imperative that these SMEs understand what it means to be “riding on Brunei Darussalam’s image” and widen their scope of possibilities.

“(The national halal agenda) is not only about selling halal food … providing halal logistics is another, for example. Or even halal software, or software that helps deliver the halal product,” he said. These solutions address concerns like how to transport the goods and ensure the halal integrity doesn’t get compromised anywhere along the line, he added.

Brunei’s Halal drive gaining momentum

logo“Halal concept businesses are big business,” he said, adding that it is estimated to generate up to US$560 billion in revenue annually. This figure is expected to increase, as public interest and demand for such services continue to rise.

Another strong “pulling factor” for this type of business is the fact that entrepreneurs can make Halal profits, which will enable them to fulfil their Fardhu Kifayah’ (collective obligation).

The Permanent Secretary voiced his confidence that Brunei, with its strong Islamic foundation and MIB philosophy, will be able to enhance the trust of consumers in the global Halal market with its strict Halal product certification process.

Brunei Port Expansion Project (Pulau Muara Besar)

One of the supporting projects for Brunei Halal Brand is the development of Pulau Muara Besar (PMB). The plan is to develop a new container port which will be supported by export processing zone and industrial park. Once PMB is fully developed, it will help to promote Brunei Halal Brand in a number of ways, amongst others, attracting food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic investors to set up their operation and export their Halal certified end products to third countries.

Look out, they’re going halal

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

BRUNEI is among Southeast Asian countries that have been eyeing a big slice of the global halal market. But while the region has been noted to have held the leadership position in the halal industry for years now, food giants in the Middle East and the West have taken notice of how halal production can broaden their market reach and

Set Sail On Cruises With Dream Charter

26Bandar Seri Begawan – Set sail on a voyage with Dream Charter, which offers an unforgettable experience on the 11-metre luxury yacht, Petima.

The six-month anniversary of the tour yacht’s operation in Brunei waters was marked recently.

Present at the ceremony was Dato Paduka Haji Hamdillah bin Haji Abdul Wahab, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources; Sheikh Jamaluddin, the Brunei tourism chief and other distinguished guests.

After witnessing the simple ceremony at the Bunga wharf in Kota Batu, the guests were sailed away on a brief tour along the fascinating mangrove lined waters of the Brunei River estuary.

The idea to set sail a leisure charter operation in Brunei was first inspired during yachting sports meet in Labuan, known as the Borneo International Yachting Challenge. There, a local Bruneian, Awang Bohari bin Abdullah, 42, and a foreign couple, Peter Moeller, 58, a German and an Irish woman, Aideen Henry, came to know each other.

“We first met at the international boating challenge in Labuan last October and we became inspired by each others enthusiasm,” said Aideen.

Peter and Aideen had the Petima, a 15-tonne, 11-metre luxury boat, which Peter bought from a Danish yachtsman.

Awang Bohari had the interest and knowledge of local conditions. All three had boundless energy and vision. Since then, they have provided sailing tours to places such as Labuan and Limbang. Their sunset cruises and honeymoon cruises are becoming more popular. The day sailing and even business meetings are proving to be a famous choice.

Dream Charter is supported vigorously by the Brunei Tourism Industry programme, Kenali Negara Kita (KNK) and has been ranked one of the top ten best ‘must do in Brunei’ activities by expatriates and locals.

Since the response from public members has been good, another yacht will be operational in October.

There have been monthly promotions available and last month, the sunset cruise which brings passengers to watch the scenery of the sunset while enjoying snacks and beverages, was a winner. In addition, passengers were given free T-shirts featured with the slogan “Sail Away with Petima”.

Petima can accommodate up to fifteen passengers and an ample space on the deck for a view of the islands and the open sea.

The well maintained, hard wood 25-year old has proved its reliability by crossing the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and has operated extensively in the tropics.

“There is no reason to doubt the endurance of the yacht even though much of it is made of hard wood,” said Aideen.

Dream Charter brochures are mainly marketed through hotels, cafes and on the Internet where response has been great,” said Awang Bohari. ~ Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

“Halal – an engine of growth and opportunity”

droppedImage

In 2008, Brunei’s International Halal Market Conference set a new standard for high quality, industry-led conference content.

Themed “The Emergence Of The Halal Market Economy”, the IHMC 2008 brought together leading Halal sector specialists to review the progress of this exciting new market paradigm.

This year, with the ongoing concern about the state of the global economy, the IHMC 2009 will focus on the pivotal role that the Halal industry can play as an engine of growth for economic recovery, expansion and opportunity.

Despite the global economic down-turn, the demand for Halal products and services has never been higher.

Global interest in Halal continues to grow with the implementation of new standards, commercial developments and international joint-ventures, and the Halal sector is emerging as a powerful engine of growth in the global economy.

As a Malay Islamic Monarchy, Brunei Darussalam has made a strong commitment to the development of the Halal sector, both as an Islamic responsibility, as well as a means of economic strength and diversification.

This years International Halal Market Conference reflects this commitment with a selection of topics that will address issues of global market concern, as well as to showcase the advances that Brunei’s Halal agenda has made in recent years.

Conference sessions will include:

  • Brunei’s Role in the Global Halal Market
  • Developing Infrastructure for the Halal Industry
  • Marketing Halal Products & Services
  • Halal Guidelines for the Pharmaceutical Sector
  • Halal Standards Development for the OIC
  • Halal Ingredients – the Key to Market Expansion
  • Analysis & Testing Methods in Halal Science
  • The Business of Halal – Balancing Priorities
